Biography

John Bulloch Souter’s original etchings are sufficiently scarce as to prompt Kenneth Guichard to begin his entry on the artist “The etchings of John Souter are seldom seen and are largely unknown” and to end with the remark “Souter is certainly an etcher, who needs to be recorded more fully” (British Etchers, 1850-1940).

John Bulloch Souter was a Scottish artist, from Aberdeen. By the time he moved to London in 1926 J.B.Souter was already well established as an original etcher. During this early period landscape predominates in his etched work; however, as the 1920’s progressed, J.B.Souter began to establish himself as a portrait painter and figure compositions begin to appear more frequently in his etched work.
